According to Foucault, history can no longer make do with collecting monuments and sources and turning them into documents. A trace is no longer a simple document of a certain development, rather begging questions as to how and under what circumstances the given documents came to be. Similarly, a photograph is no longer a simple document (for instance a portrait of someone), rather asking questions regarding the cultural, institutional as well as technological preconditions of photography.
Jan Lesák, Jan Maštera and Václav Kopecký explore these very “documentary” conditions of photography. They take its particular forms, functions or context (internet, research, process of origination) and give them a peculiar aesthetic form, moving from document to monument; and back.
