Michal Škoda has been working on his cycle Time and Environment since 2011 (besides his even more personal Records, authorial books and other projects). Drawings, collages and photographs of various formats have served as a visual journal to capture the banalities and mysteries of everyday in a minimalist form. Since the perception of architecture represents one of the vanishing points of Michal’s works, the selection for the exhibition in Drdova Gallery concentrates on the imprint of man in time, or as the case may be, the artist in his works. What is also essential for a journal series is time; the time of its creation (artist) as well as the time of leafing through it (spectator). To convey the sense of the latter, the installation includes a projection of photographs of all Michal’s works from a single year made by Aleksandra Vajd and Hynek Alt. The works by Michal Škoda (1962) represent a significant update of European avant-garde tradition. His artworks can be categorized as architecture, sculpture, object and spatial realization. The basic concept of Škoda’s reflections consists in his notion of space derived from his observation of objects and phenomena shifted to another authorial construction. He is also interested in the idea of the currency of the two-dimensional as well as the two versus the three-dimensional. He is therefore considering facets such as surface, segmentation, and stratification, which links back to the idea of perceptual emptying, causing him to focus on the tendency for organisation and categorisation when it comes to sensual perception of surface, colour and detail in relation to the structural whole of space. Works by Michal Škoda have appeared at numerous exhibitions, e.g. in the National Gallery in Prague, Moravian Gallery and Brno House of Arts in Brno, Czech Republic; Centre d’Art Neuchatel, Hebel_121 in Basel, Switzerland; Center for Contemporary Non-Objective Art in Brussels, Belgium; and Studio 1.1 in London, UK.
