Documentary film researched and directed by French curator Marie de Brugerolle, “Who’s that Guy?” is a portrait of artist Guy de Cointet (1934-1983) composed of interviews and documents from his friends - greatest personalities of American art - such as Paul McCarthy, Mike Kelley or John Baldessari.
Guy de Cointet was a key figure of West Coast conceptual art and performance emerging scene of the 1970s and 80s. In his non-linear and often absurd narratives, the artist deployed the scenic prop-like objects and theatre settings to ransack relations between words, colours, shapes and meanings. His long term collaboration with actors, interest in theatre and abuse of the simplicity of modernist forms, as much as the use of “ready made language” of soap operas and forms makes him be more then twenty years after his premature death one of the most important predecessors to current performance approach.
the projection will be followed by discussion with the author of the movie, curator Marie de Brugerolle
