The first of the Accessibility Note exhibitions will open a loose series of site specific projects presenting socially engaged art and institutional critique. Organized for the 2018/19 academic year by curator Magdalena Jadwiga Härtelova, the series consists of exhibitions by students and internationally renowned artists. The exhibition by Hana Chmelíková and Radka B. Doubravová, a student and an alumni of the Academy respectively, addresses motherhood, a topic that is, in academic circles, still frequently relegated to a corner. The main question the artists ask is quite universal: Where should we turn when the institutions and places that should provide critique and representation fail us? Chmelíková's and Doubravová's project follows in the steps of feminist institutional critique and conceptual art, such as the work of Mierle Laderman Ukeles and Mary Kelly, in which the artists use the status of art and art institutions to hack the present capitalist, patriarchal system that devalues certain types of labor, labor traditionally labeled as women's work. However, as in the aforementioned early feminist art, Chmelíková and Doubravová don't pine or get angry about injustice. Their project for the Accessibility Note series is ultimately a celebration of the vitality of communities and places that grow like grass through concrete in the most unlikely places -under the kitchen table, by the stove, on Messenger in between breast-feedings.
