Letters to the Mayor: Prague
23. 04. 2018 16:00–16:00
Podskalská 370/31, 128 00 Praha
Letters to the Mayor: Prague is an exhibition based upon an invitation of Czech and international architects, urban planners and theorists to write a letter to the Prague Mayor. Letters represent an alternative form of research of the most pressing issues, ideas, or aspirations that can play an important role in the decisions affecting the making and development of the Czech metropolis and which are delivered directly to the desks of city officials, and simultaneously into the public consciousness. By switching the common relation “city assigns – architects responds” and by employing international architectural community in proposing ideas for Prague, the project questions dynamics that set architect's role in the process of city making.
The letters will be handed over to Prague Mayor during the opening event as an act of evaluation of the past and the present of Prague, specifically in the transitional time between two election periods, as a reasearch of possible scenarios and visions of the city development and as a starting point for further discussions on the alternative futures of Prague.
Started in New York in 2014 by Storefront for Art and Architecture, it has been presented in more than 18 cities worldwide. The initiative supports international discussion about the position of an architect in urban planning, his relation to socio-political apparatus and citizenship. For former iterations, please see: www.storefrontnews.org/programming/letters-to-the-mayor/
The letters will be exhibited as a part of Jan Boháč's installation Letters to the Mayor: Prague, Pigeon, Doves & Homers. The installation, based on an imperfect old-fashioned mean of communication (pigeon-post), points to the main topic of the LTM project: communication struggle of two partner sides. Jan Boháč creates metaphorical narrative of the unfavored old-fashioned communication mediator: feral urban homing pigeon.
