Max Lysáček is preparing an exhibition for the Provoz Gallery, the title of which may sound somewhat ironic given the current local and world events. What is interesting about Lysáček's work, however, is that although it speaks a contemporary visual language, its content is in a kind of timelessness. This is despite the fact that the author works with quite concrete themes such as reflections on the near future, aliens, social crises, forms of communication and so on. All of these topics are somehow woven together to form an ungraspable nebula of ideas and slogans that can be read in all directions. This is why the work feels urgent and indifferent at the same time. It's a unique way of not presenting the viewer with a clear message about how to perceive the work.
The installation at Provoz Gallery follows these rules. It is a dialogue between beings that is conducted using familiar but unreadable symbols. We can sense elements of science fiction, utopia or even socially engaged art in an installation that is exploitative of many cultural phenomena. In reality, however, it is more of an abstract visual poetry than a work with a concrete message that subscribes to a subcultural aesthetic.
But the work remains narrative and playful, it does not renounce visuality. The formal form of the work is the result of the same combinatory strategy that Lysáček employs in playing with its content. It is therefore eclectic and uncluttered, but at the same time impressive.
Consideration of what the "good news" consists in is greatly complicated by this described authorial approach. It is impossible to tell whether it is sarcasm or sincere encouragement or perhaps an egomaniacal rant: Max is here, finally some good news! In the end, it doesn't matter how the viewer wants to understand the exhibition; the artist deliberately does not encourage them to do anything specific. All of this together, however, speaks to one universal feature of the exhibition.
Currently, he works in Brno not only as a prominent intermedia artist, but also as a curator at the Sibiř Gallery from 2022. He works with a variety of media, which he combines into multi-layered assemblages that can take the form of an object, an interactive installation, video or sound.
Lysáček's work is a mix of visions and influences that are difficult to grasp. He is interested in imagining the near future and the diverse phenomena that manifest contemporary society. In his object-based multimedia installations he works with themes of interpersonal communication and its various levels and cryptic forms. His work is an updated postmodern collage that is actually traditional and narrative in nature, yet coded and unfinished. Thus, it forces the viewer to search for more and more interpretative strategies of his straightforward yet complicated works.
