Jiří Tomiška paints people and their surroundings: portraits, objects, and urban landscapes. He is also inspired by the history of painting. His paintings attempt to reveal the inner geometry of the subject and to explore the flow of feelings in three-dimensional space—the flow between the painter, the elements of the subject, and the viewer of the scene.

He was born in Brno, where he attended the Husovice High School, then studied cybernetics at the Brno University of Technology and worked in research. After arriving in Canada, he began drawing intensively and studied experimental painting and drawing at the Ontario College of Art in Toronto (Graham Coughtry’s studio).

Tomiška has exhibited his work in Toronto (e.g., Peak Gallery) and in the Czech Republic (e.g., Chodovská Tvrz in Prague, the mini-gallery of the Research Institute of Veterinary Medicine in Brno, Art-n-Coffee in Prague). Programs about his paintings have also been featured on Czech and Canadian television. He exhibited a double portrait of Josef Škvorecký at the Czech Consulate in Toronto. One of his portraits (JUDr. Joseph Cermak) is part of the permanent collection of the University of Toronto and is on display at the Munk School of Global Affairs.
