Join us in remembering one of the most significant events of 1989 in our country – the Velvet Revolution. As part of the nationwide cultural and educational project Freedom Week 2026, the Museum of Fine Arts Liberec will screen director Slavomír Zrebný’s compilation documentary Music + Revolution = Velvet Revolution.
The Velvet Revolution had a soundtrack of its own. Slovak documentary filmmaker Slavomír Zrebný created a compilation film whose true protagonist is the music of November 1989. The screenplay and selection of archival footage are the work of Ladislav Snopko, one of the prominent figures of November ’89. According to Snopko, the atmosphere among the demonstrating crowds at the time felt more like a great rock concert than a political upheaval – a space of togetherness where everyone suddenly stood as equals.
This very question – who made up the protesting crowds and how the revolution was experienced by a society that was far from homogeneous – connects the film with our current exhibition Kvet Nguyễn – Till the Water Meets the Shore. The exhibition traces the visual story of the Vietnamese diaspora in Czechoslovakia, from post-war migration and socialist internationalism to November 1989 as a pivotal turning point, when the question of “where do I belong?” took on a new urgency for the community.
The screening thus provides a contemporary audiovisual context for a moment that the exhibition explores from the perspective of a minority on the margins of society.
