Home is one of the most important archetypes in Ukraine, just as it is in many other cultures around the world. The image of a lost home is one of the oldest artistic motifs and appears even in mythology. Yet we rarely speak of a home that has lost its people.
Civilians killed in rocket and bomb attacks, soldiers fallen in war, people who left their homes to escape the war, people who left in an illusory search for a better life, people who left out of fear, and people who left their homes because of betrayal. Their homes remain. Homes that preserve the memories of those who will never return to remember.
NURT Art Association was founded in Lviv in 2011 as an independent multidisciplinary art initiative at the instigation of artist Mykhailo Barabash and composer Ostap Manulyak. It brings together Ukrainian artists working in the fields of audiovisual and digital art, experimental music, performance, and intermedia projects. Also participating in the group’s activities are Yuriy Bulka, Ostap Manko, Serhiy Petlyuk, Roman Haydeychuk, Yaryna Shumska , and others.
In its projects, the group addresses themes of war, memory, ecology, culture, and history, and has long sought to promote and develop contemporary Ukrainian experimental art within a European and international context.
Since its inception, the association has organized more than thirty festivals, exhibitions, concerts, workshops, lectures, and interdisciplinary projects. Among the most significant are the International Festival of Audiovisual Art TETRAMATYKA, the VOX ELECTRONICA electroacoustic music festival, the Sacred Space and PANOPTICON projects, and the ConstantY contemporary music ensemble.
