Who are May and Fusako Shigenobu? Fusako – leader of an extremist left-wing fraction, the Japanese Red Army, involved in a number of terrorist operations – has been hiding in Beirut for almost 30 years. May, her daughter, born in Lebanon, only discovered Japan at the age of twenty-seven, after her mother’s arrest in 2000. And Masao Ada- chi? A screenwriter and radical activist filmmaker, committed to the Palestinian cause, was also underground in Lebanon. In his years as a film director, he had
been one of the instigators of a ‘theory
of landscape’ – fukeiron: through filming landscapes, Adachi sought to reveal the structures of oppression that underpin and perpetuate the political system.

Eric Baudelaire (lives in Paris) is a visual artist and filmmaker. His research-based film practice also unfolds as installations incorporating photography, printmaking, performance, publications and screenings. His films Letters to Max (2014), The Ugly One (2013) and The Anabasis of May and Fusako Shigenobu, Masao Adachi, and 27 Years Without Images (2011) were shown at the FIDMarseille, Locarno, Toronto, New York and Rotterdam film festivals. Recent solo exhibitions were held at the Fridericianum in Kassel, Berkeley Art Museum, Kadist Art Foundation in San Francisco, Bétonsalon in Paris, the Bergen Kunsthall, the Beirut Art Center, Gasworks in London, La Synagogue de Delme in France and The Hammer Museum in Los Angeles. He has participated in Sharjah Biennial 12, Seoul Mediacity Biennial, the Yokohama Triennial, the Taipei Biennial, Berlin Documentary Forum 2, La Triennale in Paris and the Baltic Triennial. His films and installations are in the collections of the Reina Sofia Museum in Madrid, the MACBA in Barcelona, the Centre Pompidou in Paris and the Museum of Modern Art and The Whitney Museum of American Art in New York.

Film screenings are organized in association with LUX, London. Eric Baudelaire's work is presented in the exhibitionMoving Image Department – 3rd Chapter: The Owl's Legacy and Its Discontents in the National Gallery in Prague. His films have been shown in the Czech Republic for the first time at the Jihlava International Documentary Film Festival.
