We invite you to the next installment of the lecture series New Media Art Today. 

Paula Malinowska will present her research in a lecture titled Non-Human Perspectives in Digital Art, which will also explore aspects of the exhibition Swelling Petals, Counting Opacity. 

The lecture will explore Paula Malinowska’s doctoral artistic research, which asks what contemporary CGI imagery and the medium of animation can contribute to our relationship with nature and our own humanity. One of the outcomes of this research is the exhibition project Swelling Petals, Counting Opacity, which uses speculative fiction to explore the mutual proliferation of human and plant bodies. The research reflects on everyday moments of contact with digital technology, which subtly reshapes what it means to be human. 

Paula Malinowska focuses on digital media and photography. She is a graduate of the Department of Intermedia at the Academy of Fine Arts and Design in Bratislava, where she currently works, and is also a doctoral candidate in the Department of Digital Arts. Her artistic practice includes CGI audiovisual works, 3D printing techniques, and photography, which she further develops into multimedia installations. Her research draws on studies in biology, climatology, and the development of digital technologies, which she combines with elements of speculative fiction and fantasy. She often focuses on the life cycles of beings (organisms), which serve as inspiration for creating stories that transcend the hierarchies established by human society and offer alternative perspectives on the possibilities of empathetic relationships and communication. She has presented her work at international group exhibitions and events, such as House of Confluence (Governors Island, New York, US, 2024), Sentience (Voloshyn Gallery, Miami, US, 2024), Ctrl + ↑ for Coyote Time (Trafó Gallery, Budapest, HU, 2024), Fluid Coordinates (Grand Palais, Bern, CH, 2024), Whoever settles in a perfect home will have to move (Glassbox, Paris, FR, 2023). Notable Slovak presentations include the group exhibitions Will I Ever Look Into Your Eyes Again? (Šopa Gallery, Košice, 2024), Fossora (Bratislava City Gallery, 2023), and Disappearing Body (Schaubmar Mill, SNG, 2021). In 2024, she was one of the recipients of the Oskar Čepan Award. In 2022, she won the open call “Secondary Archive” for artists from the V4 countries (Platform for Women Artists from Central and Eastern Europe). She has completed residencies at Residency Unlimited in New York (2024) and at the MuseumsQuartier in Vienna (2023).

Concept of the lectures New Media Art Today engages with the current discourse and forms of audiovisual, digital, and online art, which were previously referred to as “new media art.” This lecture series, featuring invited guests, will explore possible transformations of the concept of “new media” and its critical reflections at Vašulka Kitchen Brno, while also addressing topics that are currently resonating in this field and across disciplines.
