In the work of these three artists, painting is neither a medium of surprising motifs of escapist artistic imagination nor a tool of critical engagement. It takes note of the mundane, but allows the viewer to glimpse it in a new way, primarily through observational sensitivity and the intensity or prominence of colour itself. The subject is emancipated by this sensitivity, it remains commonplace, but no longer banal – strongly atmospheric, often melancholic, inward, iconic.
