Tomáš Císařovský (*1962) is one of the most remarkable painters on the Czech art scene. At the end of the eighties he entered the postmodern flow, together with his contemporaries. His domain is figurative painting, in which he deals mostly with personal and collective history and memory, using motives from Czech and Czechoslovak history. His series From The Diary of My Grandfather Legionnaire (1989) goes back to the end of the World War I, Time-barred Era (2002-2003) comments the period of the so called normalisation. From social issues, the author escapes to lonely landsapes paintings, in peculiar colour scale. Another field of Císařovský´s works is watercolour painting (since the nineties, e.g. The Dolomites series). Císařovský is a thoughtful recorder of stories, gestures and events, whose simple form lets space for ambiguous meanings. Recently, his figural motives are widened by subtle paintings of animals, mostly does. Their grace and fragility go together with neutral colours background, one of the significant signs of Císařovský´s distinctive painter handwriting. Annotation: Kateřina Štroblová
