The exhibition covers various periods and themes of Josef Mištera's work. It begins with a set of remarkable smudged ink drawings from the 1980s called Reminiscences of Most, in which he created complex structures and constructions, responding to the atmosphere of an admirable old city that had to disappear from the face of the earth due to the malevolence of the totalitarian regime. Important for his development are his illustrations, in which he captures the atmosphere of books by great representatives of world and Czech literature, such as Stendhal, Sandová, Gogol, Zoshchenko and Loukotková, with expressive handwriting and a sense of colour combinations.

For many years he was mainly devoted to the organisation and building of the school, but he returned to freelance work a few years ago and has been working more and more intensively. In the 1920s he produced a number of pen drawings, which he arranges into thematic sets. These include Sudhéta (Boar Forest), Avenues, Fortresses, Towers and Islands. We did not want to prepare a retrospective, but an exhibition in which illustrations alternate with free drawings and paintings. It is structured according to areas of meaning so that the artist's development can be seen in its entirety.
