Lucie Rosenfeldová's video Towards the Management of Doubt (2014, part of GMU's Moving Image Collection) – the first of two videos in this exhibition – reflects a time in which technology was seen as a model for self-management and self-improvement. According to this thinking, computers were predictable and thus could provide a stable framework for an increasingly unpredictable world. Coaching and therapy offered a rational, mechanistic approach to our personal and professional relationships and challenged us to take responsibility for what we put into the world and the consequences of those actions. Ten years later, a second video – a new collaboration between Lucie Rosenfeldová and Matěj Pavlík – attempts to explore what has changed in the relationship between us and the world we shape through technology. Our lives have become less predictable, and the systems we have in place to deal with uncertainty - climate models, career plans or economic forecasts – have become less and less effective. Chaos Therapy suggests that today's management of doubt no longer seeks to eliminate uncertainty. Instead - like the automated drawings referenced in Pavlik's new photographs – it embraces irrationality because it has never ceased to be part of culture and technology, flowing through frameworks of predictability and embracing things we cannot control.
