The installation and film program examines the imprint of human power across different forms of community and coexistence. It moves from plant life, increasingly severed from the soil through advanced horticultural technologies, through animal breeding designed to maximise selected traits, to persistent colonial practices that continue to affect communities of humans, animals and plants, as well as the non-living environment.

For Fotograf Festival Zone, Dominik Styk is creating an outdoor installation based on the growth of algae, situated somewhere between a sculptural and scenographic environment and a laboratory.

Daily screenings in the cinema will feature Thérèse Anna Rafter’s film Hybrid, which confronts us with a human construction of “nature” through footage of a hunt seen from the perspective of a predator. Drawn from material originally produced for research purposes, the images initially make it difficult to tell whether we are looking through the eyes of a bird or those of a drone operator.

Oleksiy Radynski’s essay Where Russia Ends examines the overlooked history of settler colonialism and environmental destruction in Indigenous territories occupied by Russia.

Polina Davydenko’s new film, meanwhile, takes a documentary approach to contemporary Russian imperialism and the effects of the ongoing war, focusing in particular on a community of former miners from the Donetsk region.

Curator: Ivana Hrončeková
