Tereza Holá’s exhibition explores both the symbolism and the reality of this fluid’s production. It addresses milk as a relationship.
The works are a deeply physical portrayal of motherhood—distorted and exploited for the sake of feeding humanity—and of how this problematic relationship with farm animals is reflected in our own relationships. Where does the line between respect for our own bodies and those of others lie, and how is this sensitivity cultivated and shaped? How far are we willing to go in legitimizing the use of tools designed to increase milk production?
Mulch barriers and rumen cannulas used in the dairy industry are part of the exhibited objects and drawings on parchment made from cow hides, just as they were once part of living bodies. All taking a critical stance towards our involvement in consumption, and yet reflect on corporeality and the double-edged nature of extraction—exploiting others and how this, in turn, affects us.
