Tourism is a modern phenomenon that began at the end of the 18th century. How much has it changed from its beginnings to the present day? How does it affect people's everyday lives? How is tourism changing destinations around the world? What positives and negatives does it bring? And what is the future of travel for the 7 billion people on our planet?
Tourism is a multifaceted phenomenon that nowadays acts as a natural part of our lives. But in reality it is a surprisingly young "invention". It was born only at the end of the 18th century, along with the Industrial Revolution, the transformation of the perception of time, the development of transport, bourgeois culture and new ideas about relaxation, health, nature and romantic experiences. Tourism today is mainly about the tourists themselves. The history of tourism is not only the history of places, but above all the history of people, of all of us.
The uncontrollable boom of tourism came in the second half of the 20th century and gradually brought with it global problems. In this exhibition installation, we want to present the transformation where the adventurous travel of individuals became a mass phenomenon that transformed landscapes, cities, the human body and our imagination. We want to show tourism as a cultural practice, a lifestyle and a way of contemporary man's search for meaning, beauty, regeneration, adventure - and sometimes even for himself. We want to open up critical themes of the impact of tourism on society, nature, cities and entire countries, its environmental impact, the theme of overtourism and the overall unsustainability of this current global situation.
The exhibition Tourism: Our Luxury, Our Suffering is a collaboration with Jan Pezda, author of Sun, Water, Air. It combines documentary materials, data or expert information with artworks by contemporary authors.
