Andrea Lédlová’s artwork is typical for its distinct expressive elements. Drawing is her initial medium that she studied in Jiří Petrbok’s Studio at the Academy of Fine Arts in Prague. However, she very much likes to cross over to other media – objects and installations. These are mostly sewn objects, which the author deems as matter similarly to the motif in the still-life paintings of Dutch masters. Andrea Lédlová showed her interest in historical models in her recent thesis. She used canonic statuaries from art history - the Antique statuary Laocoön and His Sons and the Baroque statuary Apollo and Daphne by Gian Lorenzo Bernini. To this day, these symbols of beauty have determined our general rules for its understanding and have confirmed that “Antique beauty” is valid even in modern times that are typical for ever-present visual information influenced by new technologies. Almost every new generation of visual artists revises it and comes up with its own vision for the future. In her thesis, Andrea Lédlová transformed her historical models into fabric statues that look more like sci-fi monsters from some gaming environment that announce the end of the world. The softness of the sewn statues evoking monumental plush toys is a part of her latest artworks. In addition to historical citations, Andrea Lédlová likes to connect motifs and opens up new associations for already established cultural formulas with unique poetics, where form no longer depends on function and actual content means nothing. However, it is not about some emptying but rather about search within the boundaries of contemporary visual arts. An almost masterful switch from one medium to another (statue, drawing) is an important aspect of understanding the artwork of Andrea Lédlová.
In the Altán Klamovka Gallery, the artist shall use 33 plush monsters that she sewed four years ago. Since then she has used them to create matter in the form of one large monster or a column, which she transforms into a drawing. The transformation of a tri-dimensional space into a two-dimensional space is an important moment for interpreting her artwork. She takes this principle even further in the Altán Klamovka Gallery. She shall use the statue that she made based on a plush model to create another plush statue and its drawing. Behind this process is the story of one object that becomes the model for another possible visual artwork. Storytelling is the artist’s other interest. Let’s get drawn into the artist’s fantasy world with specific poetics!
