Before World War II, in the 1920s and 1930s, Brno was one of the leading centers of modern architecture, thanks in particular to its early functionalist buildings, photographs of which appeared at the time in prestigious European architecture publications.

This relatively short walking tour through the city center will take you in the footsteps of the architects who gave Brno its modern look and created buildings that are still admired today by experts and architecture enthusiasts from around the world. It will introduce you to the works of Bohuslav Fuchs, Ernst Wiesner, and other leading figures of interwar architecture.

You’ll see the famous Avion Hotel, the House of Arts, the Moravian Bank, the (arcade), Zeman’s Café, and other exceptional projects that reflect the ideas and inspirations of leading figures of European modernism, such as Le Corbusier and Adolf Loos.

You’ll learn why Brno became one of the centers of modern architecture, what technical and structural innovations were used in these buildings, and how the principles of spatial design evolved. You’ll hear stories about these exceptional buildings and figures, touch the original materials, and at the end of the walk, in the perfectly preserved interior of the Sedláček Café, you can fully immerse yourself in the atmosphere of an era when Brno ranked among the centers of the architectural avant-garde and was not afraid to be one step ahead.
