A lecture summarising the importance of Oliver Grau’s publications Virtual Art. From Illusion to Immersion (MIT Press 2003) and MediaArtHistories (MIT Press 2017) and their impact on the development and establishment of new media art as a scientific discipline. Oliver Grau is a professor at the Donau-Universität Krems in Austria. He specializes in the history of media art, immersive image, emotions and immersion, the history of telepresence, artificial life and digital humanities. His book Virtual Art. From Illusion to Immersion was selected as Book of the Month by the magazine Scientific American and it has become the most quoted monograph of the decade. A program within the exhibition Computer Graphic Re-visited 2.0.
