We usually imagine the future as something as yet unknown—as a world of new materials, technologies, and possibilities. The exhibition Remnants of the Future however, presents it as a landscape pieced together from what has already been part of human experience: worn fabrics, industrial scraps, body fragments, digital images, and traces of violence. Here, textiles are not merely a medium but also a material archive that preserves the memory of the body, the landscape, the home, industrial production, and wartime experiences. A stitch can both connect and wound, repair and perforate, preserve memories and record testimony. What has lost its original function becomes the starting point for new forms and meanings. In the remnants of a world that has served its purpose, one can already hear the future, which is still taking shape.

An important starting point for the exhibition is the work of Inez Tuschnerová, a prominent figure in textile art who contributed to the development of art protis technology in the 1960s. Her legacy is reimagined by Judita Levitner Studénka through synthetic textiles and destructive interventions; at the same time, she interprets it from a feminist perspective and connects it to questions of labor, overproduction, and the value of materials.

The memory of the material unfolds in relation to the body and everyday life. The intuitive movement of the hand, guided by the structures of old textiles, shapes the sewn images of Daniela Mikulášková, while Kristýna Kovaříková uses the repetitive rhythm of tufting to connect experiences of care and loss with the need to reestablish order. 

In other figurative approaches, the body merges with geological and aquatic systems (Michal Mižu Mitro) or disintegrates into vulnerable fragments (Jan Bražina). The stitch takes on a compelling role in the work of Maud Kotasová, who guides it through perforated car bodies and industrial objects to preserve a record of wartime violence.

Another dimension of the exhibition is opened up by the varying temporal layers of textile imagery—ranging from archetypal images of the body and home, in which everyday life, care, decay, and renewal (Martin Skalický), all the way to fleeting messages and nostalgic images of the recent digital past, viewed with subtle irony and playfulness (Vendula Chalánková, Vojtěch Luksch).

The exhibition is held at ŠMERAL ART FACTORY near the former Vlněna and Mosilana factories, where the memory of the exhibited works intertwines with the industrial history of the site.
